We use gardening to bring about positive changes in the lives of people living with mental health problems like depression and anxiety, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable.
Gardening and spending time with nature is proven to provide a wide range of mental health benefits. From reducing stress, isolation and depression to boosting your immune system.
Engagement in gardening activities has shown to promote social relationships, family connection, emotional and mental wellbeing, moderate stress, reduce depression and anxiety.
Further personal well-being effects include increased enjoyment, sense of achievement, satisfaction and pride from nurturing the plants; provide quiet time for reflection and increased confidence and self-esteem.
Gardening is also an excellent form of physical exercise, which is known to have significant mental health benefits. Studies show that even short bursts of activity can increase our alertness, energy and mood, while frequent exercise can increase our self-esteem, reduce our stress and anxiety levels and prevent the onset of mental illness.
Gardening for several hours provides instantaneous reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms, while gardening daily is associated with reduced stress and increased life satisfaction.
Our Gardening Group meets every Tuesday at our Westminster HQ, in a quaint, and quiet enclosed space. We have a wide range of plants, shrubs and bulbs to satisfy every gardeners taste, and we welcome people with little to know gardening experience, right down to seasoned veterans.
To really appreciate the space, our selection of plants, and the benefits of gardening you need to come and see it for yourself!
